It’s a winter tubing wonderland at the Woodbury Ski Area

“Immediately tubed down the mountain.” Woodbury Ski Area is about ten minutes away from my parents’ house. ‘Area’ is the perfect way to describe what it is for skiing. It’s like one longish hill where the trees were taken away. It’s one longish part of a hill:

We went there and I would try to do jumps and grind on a rail and it was sceery but fun. Somehow it was really dangerous even before they got tubing. My friend Harry fell off the chairlift when its restraining bar went flying up mid-hill and he got a compound fracture. The owner, Rod Taylor, rode up on a snowmobile and Harry thought he was coming to help him but he just waved and kept on goin’.

The tubing facility is across the street. A picture from the website:

if it looks fast

Tubing tip from the website: “If in immediate danger, throw away the tube to stop quickly.”

And some Tripadvisor reviews:

There was no one there to supervise the mountain. So people were getting hurt left and right.

Horrible and dangerous.

A week later I still can’t stop thinking of how grateful I am that my family did not get seriously hurt.

“Hauntingly Dangerous”

This was a nice well kept though small ski area when I was a kid but 40 years of ownership by Mr Taylor has ruined the area and made it terribly dangerous

We decided to go snow tubing and looked online to find a snow tubing place that allowed my almost 4 year old to tube as well. I should have left her home because I have to say one of the most disgustingly unorganized and dangerous places I have been to.

We even saw a kid going down one of the advanced trails, he could not have been more than 9 and he was seriously hurt and no one was there to help him as he was crying in the middle of the hill. I had to motion to the only worker I saw all day and he went to him.

We decided not to zorb as it was understaffed, the staff that were there seemed to be figuring it out as they went, and we watched one zorb ball deflate midway down the hill…

My daughter was charged $5 for one chicken finger. When I asked the owner’s wife how many come in an order she said she didn’t know, “but it should be more than one”.

“Hill of Horrors”

All toilets were broken

If I could give this mountain a negative star I would.

I included that last one because people reviewing things online often wish something zero stars. Negative is pretty rare.

In the summer Rod would have these “Reggae Fests” that no one was sure he was allowed to have:

If you want you can purchase VHSes of past performances, filmed by Rod. One of them features “a very young Blues Traveler, at the nascense of their important career.” DVDs are expected to be ready for purchase by mid-June 2012.
